Classic elegance and sophistication is a rare find, but it’s precisely what you will experience at the Westgate Hotel in downtown San Diego. Soon to celebrate 50 years of excellence, the Westgate exceeded my every expectation.
Being my first visit, I wasn’t anticipating the exquisite spectacle and style of Louis XIV inspired design. Indeed, the Westgate offers a Parisian escape that truly delights the senses. The impressive Grand Lobby is a re-creation of an anteroom of the Palace of Versailles and is illuminated by gorgeous Baccarat Crystal chandeliers. French tapestries adorn the walls and a beautiful wide staircase leading to the hotel’s event spaces makes for perfect photographs. Also of note in the lobby, are a variety of very expensive French antiques and paintings, including a million dollar Steinway piano, one of the first five ever built.
The stunning Grand lobby is where I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea with my family, including my two toddlers, who delight in a dress up and acting oh so sophisticated. The service, of course, was impeccable, and the presentation of delicious finger foods and desserts everything one expects from the perfect afternoon tea. And, of course, it was the million dollar Steinway that provided the music for our tea party of mostly well-dressed ladies, some sporting lavish chapeaus.
At the time of its construction, the Westgate, was the most expensive hotel to ever be built in America, and it shows. Our room was luxurious. Everything was new and fresh and delivered the comfort one expects from a five star hotel. And always important to me, and to you too, I’m certain, the room was as clean as if it were brand new, and I, and my family, were the first to enjoy it. The top-grade linens and quality mattresses made for a perfect night’s sleep.
Not to be missed is breakfast in the beautiful Fontainebleau Room, prices are reasonable and the menu choices mouthwatering. King Crab Eggs Benedict and House Smoked Salmon Hash provided the perfect start to a very busy day in San Diego. I can only imagine that Lunch and dinner at the Fontainebleau Room are equally amazing; I’m certainly planning for dinner at this wonderful restaurant on my next visit. Room service, too, exceeded our expectations, and again, prices were very reasonable.
The kids and I had a blast at the large rooftop pool. It offers splendid views of San Diego and features an outdoor bar, poolside dining, and an abundance of area for sunning and just hanging out. Enjoyed a visit to the hotel’s Aqua Vie Spa. It features a large spa facility and it’s quite impressive.
Our stay at the Westgate Hotel in San Diego exceeded our expectations in every way. Being located downtown across from the Gaslamp District, along with its proximity to so many of San Diego’s attractions, makes the Westgate the perfect place to stay when visiting the city; especially when considering that the city’s light rail system runs adjacent to the hotel.
There is no better place to stay in San Diego.
And, don’t miss the incredible warm chocolate chip cookies available late afternoons at the front desk… Yum!
